Gang ram motorist off road and steal his car
The gang of four men tailgated the motorist for several kilometres before ramming his car, forcing him to stop.
They then confronted him on the roadside and smashed his car’s rear window before stealing the vehicle.
The 59-year-old from Co Limerick was uninjured after the attack but was badly shaken.
The incident occurred in north Cork, just outside the village of Ballyhea on the main N20 Cork to Limerick road, at 8.50pm on Saturday.
The man was driving a white 07-registered Volkswagen Golf GTi north towards Charleville when he noticed a car, thought to be a red Nissan, driving erratically behind him.
He told gardaí that it closed to within yards of his rear bumper and backed off several times before he was rammed just outside Ballyhea.
He was forced to pull over and stop and when he got out of his car he was confronted by two of the trailing car’s four male occupants.
The two men smashed the Golf’s rear window before stealing it. They then did a U-turn and both the Golf and the Nissan sped off in a southerly direction. The man went to a local shop to raise the alarm.
Gardaí interviewed the man yesterday and were also examining CCTV footage from filling stations in the area in an effort to trace the Nissan’s movements before or after the hijacking.
Superintendent Pat McCarthy said gardaí are anxious to trace those responsible.
He also said gardaí believe the same gang may be linked to an incident in Co Limerick earlier in the night.
A woman living in Killeline Heights in Newcastle West reported a gang in a red 97-CE registered Nissan trying to steal a car from outside her home at about 7.40pm. They fled the scene when they were spotted.
Supt McCarthy appealed for anybody who saw a red Nissan driving on the N20 between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday night to contact gardaí.
He also urged people to watch out for the stolen white Golf GTi.
Anybody with information should contact gardaí in Mallow on 022 21105.
