Bullets found during searches
The ammunition was found along with cannabis worth about €50,000 at open ground adjacent to Ballinacurra Weston.
The site is near to where James Cronin was found buried last April after he had been shot dead by members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang of which he was a member.
The same gang are the main suspects in the Shane Geoghegan murder.
Four searches were carried out in Ballinacurra Weston, where known gang members are based and other areas in the south side of the city.
Insp Seamus Ruane of Roxboro Road Garda station said the ammunition has been sent for forensic examination.
He said: “House to house inquiries are still continuing as part of the investigation in the murder of Shane Geoghegan. We have a lot of CCTV to go through and this is a very painstaking investigation.”
A member of the McCarthy-Dundon gang is also suspected of being involved in a serious assault.
The assault happened in Michael Street on Friday evening and left the victim with serious head injuries.
After being treated at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, the victim was transferred to Cork University Hospital where his condition was said to be stable.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Limerick two Eastern European men were taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital on Sunday after they clashed with other foreigners at Castletroy.
Their injuries are not life threatening.
