AT least 116 gangland killers are still at large, according to Fine Gael, who will bring proposals to the Dáil in the coming week for a mandatory 25-year sentence for murder.

The proposed laws include restricting the movements of gang members even if they are not charged or convicted for an offence.

Fine Gael justice spokes-man Charlie Flanagan launched details of his Criminal Justice (Violent Crime Prevention) Bill at the party’s national conference in Wexford at the weekend. He said gangland crime was “the most serious threat to public safety in the State today” and “the murder rate has not been as high since the Civil War”.
