Thousands post messages of sympathy and anger on internet sites
* ‘Andy’ wrote: “My thoughts are with Shane’s family circle and friends at this awful time. You’re not alone, the rugby community and the whole country are with you in solidarity and sympathy. Nothing can replace what has been taken away from you so cruelly.”
* Eoin O’Connell stated: “To think that such a fine man was brutally robbed of his life by people who think of nothing and nobody but themselves. I hope the family of Shane find comfort in the knowledge that their son was by all accounts a noble man and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
* Patrick Hogan asked: “Why oh why? Why have we a civilised society to witness this type of callous murder? Shame on those who committed it, those who condone it and those who support it. Society must realise that buying drugs and stolen goods give people like Shane’s murderers a reason to exist and the power to commit crimes like last Saturday night.”
* ‘Patrick from Dublin’ wrote: “Our Government has to wake up and put these people behind bars. All I can do is pray for the good people of Limerick.”
* Mollie Lynch wrote: “Where does all madness end with the killing of innocent people like Shane Geoghegan? It is time our Government stepped up to the plate and put some decent laws in place to take the murderers and madmen off the streets of Ireland and to protect innocent people like Shane. My thoughts go out to his family, friends and team mates.”
