Dunnes ‘leaving staff in limbo’

THE union representing workers in Dunnes Stores, has criticised the retailer for leaving its staff in limbo as to whether a takeover is imminent by another retailer.

Mandate said a lot of workers feared for their futures, especially in the run up to Christmas and said some form of clarification was necessary as soon as possible.

Mandate assistant general secretary, Gerry Light said: “Dunnes has given their staff no consideration during this week of intensive rumours of the potential sale of the company. During a time when there is a legal requirement for companies to provide formal structures for information and consultation with employees, Dunnes has chosen to completely ignore this obligation,” said Mr Light.

“Not only has the retailer chosen to ignore the Information and Consultation Act, but they have also shown total disregard towards their staff who are genuinely concerned about their future.”

He said it was unacceptable that while the rumours of the possible sale of Dunnes to British retailer ASDA surfaced on Monday, neither company had confirmed or denied the rumours.

Mr Light said: “All Mandate has asked for at this stage is that the company clarify exactly what is taking place and alleviate the fears of Dunnes’ workers.”

He also said that in the event of a sale, Mandate would be seeking as a priority, maintenance of job security along with protection of terms and conditions for staff members.
