Rise in calls to suicide helpline

THE Cork branch of the Samaritans has witnessed a significant jump in calls in the last three months, as callers struggle to cope with the reality of the economic recession.

Since the start of August, the Samaritans in Cork has received more than 5,000 phone calls from individuals suffering from depression and other mental health concerns.

Spokesperson Pat Forde said: “Generally we take about 20,000 calls a year, but this time around because of the recession and concerns about the future and their own financial stability, more people are calling us depressed and anxious.
