Climate change ‘bigger issue than economic woes’
Nobel Laureate Dr RK Pachauri, chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Professor James Hansen, the leading scientist on global warming and head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, are among the high-profile speakers lined up for the inaugural conference of the Partnership for Change.
The partnership is a new initiative set up to educate and communicate on the challenge of climate change and global warming.
“The financial and humanitarian costs of climate change will far outweigh the risks associated with the current international financial crisis,” partnership chairman Declan Waugh said.
“Anyone who is interested in climate change should attend this important event to find out how we can shape and plan for the future and tackle the greatest challenge facing humanity,” he said.
“We all have a common moral responsibility to respond to this crisis, we cannot afford to wait.
“This conference is part of a worldwide process that is gaining momentum around the globe to inform and educate the public, so that we may together contribute positively to tackling the many causes and future problems facing humanity, in particular climate change and global warming.”
The not-for-profit conference is sponsored by EnviroManagement Services and Bord Gáis.
Environment Minister John Gormley and Sean Barrett TD, chair of the Inter-parliamentary Task Force on Climate Change and Energy Security, will address the conference on the challenges facing Ireland.
Proceeds are to be donated to assist humanitarian, medical and environmental organisations working to help communities in developing countries who live in absolute poverty and at risk from climate chaos.
The conference takes place at the Cork International Airport Hotel on November 14.
