Man jumps 30ft from window at end of EU-wide hunt

A EUROPE-wide hunt for three wanted men ended dramatically in Limerick when one jumped 30 feet from a window to try and escape gardaí.

The man, aged 43, who is from Poland, was still under Garda watch at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital last night where he is being treated for a broken leg.

Another Polish man, aged 31, was arrested at a separate address while a Romanian man in his 20s was also arrested at another location.

Gardaí say the three men were arrested on foot of warrants that alleged different offences, and that the men did not know one another.

The operation was carried out when gardaí were sent European warrants by Interpol.

Detectives at the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI) planned the operation and travelled to Limerick on Monday.

The three men sought by other police forces were tracked to three addresses in Limerick.

With the back-up of gardaí from Roxboro Road, the NBCI team mounted a stakeout of premises in the south side of the city at about 10.30pm on Monday.

Gardaí are awaiting for him to be given permission to leave hospital so they can proceed with the extradition process.

The two others have been brought to Dublin and may appear at the High Court if they decide to contest their extraditions.
