Gun and bullets found in search
A man, aged 23, and a woman, aged 26, were arrested and held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Mayorstone Garda Station.
Shotgun cartridges were also found after three houses were searched under warrant.
It was also confirmed yesterday that a new armed unit of specially trained gardaí will in coming weeks take up duty in Limerick to back up the locally based members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) who are headquartered in Dublin.
Heavily armed Regional Support Units will be deployed throughout the country to provide specialist presence in situations involving firearms.
Twenty gardaí drawn mostly from the Limerick division, will form the Regional Support Unit for the mid-west which will be the first to take up duty within the next two weeks.
Supt John Kerin said the presence of the ERU will be reduced, but they will be called in when needed.
Supt Kerin said: “The Regional Support Unit will have a highly visible presence in the estates at key times daily, dressed in distinctive uniforms. People will definitely know they’re there. They have been trained in virtually every type of weapon, both lethal and non-lethal.”
Chairman of the Limerick city joint policing committee Cllr Kevin Kiely has welcomed the imminent deployment of the Regional Support Unit. “Whereas members of the ERU were depending on advice from local detectives, these members of the Regional Support Unit are all from the area and know all the main criminals.”
