Electric Eileens get ready to rock and roll at festival weekend

Grandmother Eileen Murphy and her pal, great-grandmother Eileen McGillycuddy from Co Kerry, turned up at last year’s event after they won tickets in a raffle. They jived to the Chemical Brothers, bopped at the silent disco, and collected marriage proposals from revellers young enough to be their grandsons.

This weekend the sprightly duo will be helping to mark the 60th birthday of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by giving free bingo lessons to festival-goers at the giant bingo tent.

The ladies are also featuring in a YouTube video posted on the internet by Amnesty International.

The video shows the Eileens pouring shots of whiskey into their tea cups and pulling on their pink and yellow wellies.

A voiceover says: “They’re getting ready to rock. They’re getting ready to roll.”

They are also seen lighting some of the 60 candles on the Amnesty birthday cake with a blowtorch.

Mrs Murphy is a mother of five and grandmother of nine, while Mrs McGillycuddy is a mother of 10 and grandmother of 27.

This year’s three-day festival at Stradbally Hall will feature the Sex Pistols, Goldfrapp, Franz Ferdinand and Grace Jones.

As well as the music, the Picnic will also host information stands by Irish Aid, Concern Worldwide and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.

Director of the YouTube video of the Electric Eileens Kevin Cahill said: “The ladies were very comfortable in front of the camera, and even came up with some of their own ideas. The whole crew enjoyed the experience.”

The pensioners’ adventures at Electric Picnic 2007 featured on Today FM radio and in the RTE TV series One Thing To Do Before You Die.

The Eileens, whose hobbies include gardening and crochet, proved to the they could really party like its 1959.
