Poll: Get tough on young drivers

According to the online research of fully licensed drivers, teenagers behind the wheel are bringing fear to Irish roads.

The survey commissioned by Autoglass, fully qualified drivers want restrictions brought in against younger motorists.

Almost nine out of 10 86%) motorists out of the 2,000 questioned claim they are frightened of sharing the road with young drivers.

Motorists want a raft of tough new measures for young drivers who break the law, including after dark driving bans, driving test re-takes and restrictions on car engine sizes.

Currently, driving instructors and, therefore, driving tuition, is non-regulated, although the Road Safety Authority say they are in the process of setting up a register for motoring teachers.

Nine out of 10 91%) Irish drivers surveyed want the system regulated. Motorists are also in favour of measures to reduce the risks involving young or inexperienced drivers.
