Jerry McCabe’s son graduates at Templemore

A SON of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe, who was shot dead in an IRA robbery in 1996, was among the 286 gardaí who graduated at Templemore College yesterday.

Garda Ross McCabe, 27, will be stationed at Gurranabraher, in Cork.

His proud mother, Ann McCabe, who was present with other family members, said: “I feel very proud. I feel very proud of each and every one of them. Today is not just about me, it’s about Ross and each of the other young men and women who have chosen this course. I am delighted he has chosen the gardaí as a career.”

She said she was sure her late husband, “was looking down on us doing better work”.

Her eldest son, John, is a Garda sergeant stationed in Ennistymon.

At the prize-giving ceremony Garda Declan O’Keeffe from Youghal received the Gary Sheehan Memorial Medal for the best all-round student. He will be stationed at Kevin Street, Dublin.

The Templemore Town Council medal for social science studies went to Gda Conor Egan from Newport, Co Tipperary. He will be stationed at Ballymun in Dublin.

The Commissioner’s Medal to the student with the highest marks in academic studies was awarded to Gda John Horkan from Swinford, Co Mayo stationed in Athlone.

Of the 286 who graduated, 85 are female.
