LABOUR last night dismissed as “premature” a Government proposal to establish a special Oireachtas committee to examine solutions to the Lisbon treaty impasse.

The Government has tentatively proposed recalling the Dáil for a single day in the first week of September to establish the committee.

The Dáil is not actually scheduled to return until September 24, but that would not allow the committee enough time to do its work, as Taoiseach Brian Cowen is expected to report to his fellow EU leaders at a summit beginning on October 15.
