Four held as feud fight spills onto street

Four men became involved in a vicious brawl.

Two are linked to the McCarthy Dundon gang and the other two have links to the Keane Collopy gang.

The incident flared about 150 yards from the city courthouse at Fr Matthew Bridge. Some of the four had been at the court building earlier. The clash occurred at around 11am. Armed gardaí on security duty at the court buildings, where two major figures involved in either side of the feud appeared on remand, rushed to the scene.

All four were arrested at the scene and brought to Henry Street Garda station. A Garda spokesman said they may face charges of violent disorder.

Two weeks ago Limerick gardaí intercepted a known gunman who had travelled from England.

Gardaí suspect that he had come to the city to murder a leading member of the McCarthy Dundon gang.

He was arrested after checking into a city centre hotel. Arresting detectives found he was carrying a false passport. He was subsequently given a suspended sentence at the District Court and is understood to have returned to England. He is suspected of carrying out a gun attack on Kilrush businessman, Anthony Kelly some years ago. Prior to that he received multiple bullet wounds when he was targeted by members of the McCarthy Dundon gang.
