However, Jack Costello, 7, remains in a critical condition at South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel after being trapped under the black Audi that went off the road outside Cashel at 9.50pm on Saturday.

The driver of the car was transferred from Clonmel to Cork University Hospital for treatment yesterday and described as being in a stable condition, while one of his passengers was brought to Waterford Regional Hospital and is also stable.

Both had been listed as critically injured in the hours after the crash.

A child travelling in the car is said to be in a stable condition in South Tipperary General Hospital.

A 25-year-old man from the Rosegreen area, between Cashel and Clonmel, was killed in the collision between two cars which were travelling in the same direction from Cashel.

The self-employed mechanic’s car ended up on its side on the road. He was travelling alone.

Jack was playing in the garden of the Costello family home at the time of the crash and was caught under the wreckage of the Audi. His aunt, aged in her 50s, and grandmother, in her 80s, were also injured but are believed to be recovering.

Members of the family had gathered at the house after an anniversary Mass in memory of Jack’s grandfather, Mick Costello, earlier in the evening.

Gardaí in Cahir and Cashel are investigating and have appealed to witnesses to contact them at 052 45631.
