Man may lose eye after bottle assault
And in a separate incident, gardaí had to draw batons to disarm a man wielding a samurai sword early yesterday.
The man in his 20s, who was attacked with the broken bottle, was removed to Cork University Hospital where surgeons are fighting to save one of his eyes.
Superintendent Con Cadogan, leading the investigation, said it was likely that the injured man would lose his eye and would need extensive plastic surgery to his face.
The attack took place at about 9pm on Monday after a row broke out at Laburnum Grove, Onslow Gardens.
Gardaí at Gurranabraher are searching for the attacker, who is also believed to be in his 20s. They are appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident to contact them.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, gardaí were forced to use batons to overpower a man in his 20s who was wielding a samurai sword.
Gardaí were called to subdue the man at Courtown Drive, Knocknaheeny, at 1.10am yesterday.
When they arrived they were unable to overpower him and were forced to call for reinforcements.
“These reinforcements came from Mayfield, Togher, Ballincollig, Blarney and Anglesea Street. There were up to 20 gardaí at the scene and they finally managed to overpower him,” said Supt Cadogan.
Earlier, in different incident, another man was the victim of a “bottling” attack during which he received serious injuries to his neck.
The attack happened at St Mary’s Place, Gurranabraher, at about 9.50pm on Monday. “The injured party had a serious gash to his neck. He was taken to Cork University Hospital. While the injury is serious it is not life-threatening,” said the superintendent.
A man was later arrested in connection with that incident.
Supt Cadogan said that gardaí in the Gurranabraher area were forced to make 10 public order arrests during a night of mayhem in the area.
It is understood that most of the incidents were drink-fuelled and coincided with bonfire night.
