DPP to announce changes this summer

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) James Hamilton told the 9th annual national prosecutors conference at Dublin Castle that his inclination remains that a change in policy be implemented.

He said the pending report — to be published within the next three months — would also provide an overview and analysis of the submissions and arguments received from interested parties.

The policy of not giving reasons not to prosecute has frequently been criticised by victims and their families.

The DPP said Ireland was one of the few prosecution authorities that has given a public undertaking to review decisions on the request of interested parties.

Mr Hamilton maintained his office was also committed to improving communications with victims, which is currently done through gardaí.
