Free channel to show only film

IRISH television is expected to have its own film channel by the end of next year.

Free channel to show only film

The Irish film channel will be a non-commercial channel available to all households on the free public service digital transmission system.

As well as showing Irish and world cinema, it will screen films designed to complement primary and secondary school curricula and third-level studies.

For the first time ever Irish audiences will have the chance to view award-winning independent Irish, European and world cinema in prime time TV slots free of any commercial charges.

The channel is provided for under the broadcasting bill announced earlier this month by Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Eamon Ryan.

The channel, which will be operated by the Irish Film Board, will have an annual budget of between €3m and €4m.

Chairman of the Irish Film Board James Morris said it was intended to show the best of European and world cinema throughout the day.
