Chorus to switch all Cork customers to digital service
Because an analogue TV channel takes up the same space on the network as 10 digital channels, the move will free up huge capacity on Chorus’s cable system for a range of advanced services.
The company will be able to offer high speed broadband up to 12Mbps, phone, high-definition TV and video on demand.
The move will also make Cork the first cable network area in Ireland to completely switch from the analogue system.
To mark the switch-over, UPC, the new parent company behind Chorus ntl, has announced a digital TV pack for new customers which it called Digital Lite.
The package offers over 50 TV and radio channels including BBC 1, 2, 3, and 4, CBeebies, UTV, Channel 4, and Setanta Sports.
It also includes a digital video recorder, which can pause, rewind and record up to 80 hours of live television, for just €25 a month with no up-front or installation fees.
Simon Kelehan, UPC’s head of TV, said, “The launch of the new Digital Lite product, including a DVR, means consumers in Cork can experience the benefits of the new digital services right now for a market-beating price.”
Mr. Kelehan also committed to investing on a rolling basis over €4 million to improve the overall network performance in Cork and to further stimulate competition in the local economy.
Chorus ntl has rolled its network out to almost 856,000 homes nationwide.
