HSE asks court for ruling on blood transfusion for babies

THE Health Service Executive (HSE) will ask the High Court today for an order so it can give a blood transfusion to severely anaemic twin babies after they are born.

Their mother, who is 32 weeks pregnant, is objecting to the transfusion on religious grounds, but the HSE has claimed that the babies are at risk.

It is believed that the parents, who cannot be named by order of the court, are foreigners and members of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation.
