Gardaí search for thieves after garage robbery

GARDAÍ are searching for thieves who stole more than €400,000 worth of car diagnostic testing equipment from a garage on the Waterford/Tipperary border yesterday.

The robbery is the latest in a series of raids on garages and motor factors stores in the Munster region. It also follows a number of break-ins that occurred recently in north Cork.

Thieves broke into a garage near Newcastle, Co Tipperary, during the early hours of yesterday.

According to a Garda spokesman, they jacked up an emergency escape door at the rear of the building and kept it open by placing blocks underneath the door.

Once inside, they stole six very valuable diagnostic machines, which had only been delivered to the garage a few days earlier.

“These machines were used for testing vehicles on the high end of the market. One of the units was designed only for testing Mercedes cars,” the Garda spokesman said.

He said the machines were no larger than normal desktop computers and could have been removed very quickly.

“They also took a 46-inch plasma screen TV, which was in the garage,” the spokesman said.

Gardaí believe the thieves entered the garage, which is on the Newcastle-Cahir road, between midnight and 5am yesterday.

“We are looking to speak to anybody who might have been in the area at the time and who might have seen anything suspicious. It is possible the thieves would have left the scene in a small van, or a small truck,” the Garda spokesman said.

Gardaí were undertaking house-to-house inquiries in the area yesterday, while detectives carried out a forensic examination of the garage in the hope of coming up with clues as to the identities of the thieves.

“We are also liaising with gardaí in other counties to see if there are any similarities with other robberies,” the spokesman said.

Tens of thousands of euro worth of car diagnostic testing equipment has been stolen in the last couple of months from garages in Kilworth, Rathcormac and Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

Gardaí in Dungarvan, who are investigating the latest robbery, have asked anybody with information to phone 058 48600.
