With scheduled Oireachtas business suspended for two days as a mark of respect, TDs assembled for a special session to mark the president’s contribution to public life.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said Dr Hillery gave “outstanding and unrivalled” service to the Irish state and to the Irish people.

“Patrick Hillery won fame but he never lost his sense of modesty. He gained power but he never lost his respect for others,” Mr Ahern told TDs.

“Paddy Hillery defined loyalty. He embodied integrity. He was both clever and wise. But most of all, he was a people’s person— a Clareman, proud of his heritage and at home with his people.

“He set the highest of standards in the administration of public affairs. History will record the huge contribution Patrick Hillery made, not just to the progress of Irish society but also to our democracy.

“He was young when this country was barely born. The ideal of what Ireland could become inspired all his life and work. Now, his life is over and the state he served so long and so well will pay its final respects,” the Taoiseach said.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny remembered the human side of the late president and the ready wit in times of political tension.

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said Dr Hillery exuded dignity and honour.

He told the Dáil the former president “was one of the most important and influential figures in Irish public life over a period of four decades”.

Mr Gilmore recalled the “turbulent period” between 1969 and 1973, when the situation in the North exploded into violence.

“At a time when cool heads and calm words were never more important, Paddy Hillery rose to the challenge,” he said.

PD leader Mary Harney said Dr Hillery had ensured the office of president remained above politics.
