CONFUSION about the new motor tax system could result in consumers losing out on potential savings when buying new vehicles, car dealers have warned.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry yesterday advised motorists to become familiar with the new Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) system as well as motor tax rate changes in order to maximise any benefit when buying new cars.

The Government is introducing a VRT and motor tax scheme for new vehicles from July 1 based on carbon dioxide emission ratings in order to meet its Kyoto targets on reducing greenhouse gases.
