Third teen held on murder

A THIRD teenager was questioned last night in relation to a savage attack on two Polish men last weekend.

Third teen held on murder

One of the victims, Marius Szwajkos, 29, died on Monday and the second man, Pavel Kalite, also 29, is not expected to survive.

The two men were both stabbed in the head with a screwdriver, inflicting serious brain damage, during an attack by a gang of teenagers in Drimnagh, south Dublin early last Saturday evening.

Gardaí said the families of the two Polish men, who have flown over, were “absolutely devastated”. It is understood one of the men had a partner here in Ireland.

Detectives believe at least three teenagers were involved in the attack. They arrested one man — a 19-year-old from nearby Inchicore — on Monday. He was released from custody on Tuesday.

A second teenager — a 15-year-old from Drimnagh — was arrested on Tuesday and released yesterday morning.

A third youth — a 17-year-old also from Drimnagh — voluntarily turned up at Crumlin Garda Station yesterday afternoon in the company of his solicitor. He was arrested by gardaí on arrival.

While it is not yet clear what led to the assault, gardaí believe it was a row over drinking and that earlier the Polish men had refused to buy alcohol for the gang outside an off-licence.

Meanwhile, gardaí investigating the murder of a man in north Dublin last summer arrested a 26-year-old yesterday. Kevin Ledwidge, 27, was shot at his home on Ratoath Drive in Finglas on July 15, 2007.
