Tom, 70, records first CD
Tom has just put out his first CD at the age of 70.
For years, he has been a familiar figure in Limerick, playing his accordion in the city centre on weekdays and, on Saturdays, at the Milk Market.
Tom has written all nine songs on his CD, which include his own Munster Rugby Anthem.
Tom said: “I have been playing the accordion all my life and I play on the street every day. For years, I had this idea of doing a recording, but I’ve only got around to it recently. Sure, it’s better late than never. Denis Allen of Limerick Your’re A lady fame and Brendan Frawley did the studio work for me. I’m very pleased with the CD and it’s an ambition achieved.”
Tom learned to play the accordion from his father, who was a postman.
“My father used to go around to farmers’ houses at night and play. During the summer months, he used play at the cross road dancing. I just picked it up from him and enjoy playing and entertaining passersby in the city centre.”
For years, Tom has played at the main gate entrance to the Milk Market on Saturday mornings.
Tom said: “I get in there early and there’s great craic with all the people coming in from the country with all the spuds, cabbage, fresh eggs, and all kinds of stuff. They love my music and I wouldn’t miss a Saturday for anything.”
