Limerick’s €30m tourism boost from games

The games attract more than 2,000 participants and the event will kick off in Limerick on June 20, lasting three days.

Competitors are drawn from businesses and community groups around the country, and will compete in 19 different sports.

John King of Shannon Development, the regional tourism organisation, said: “There were a number of other cities in the running for this prestigious event and it is testimony to the sporting and tourism facilities in the region that Limerick has been awarded the games.

The region is set to benefit to the tune of €30m over the course of the five years and the event offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase Limerick.”

The corporate games is part of a worldwide series of similar events first launched in 1988 and now staged in more than 22 countries.

They were last staged in Limerick in 2001.

The individual events will be staged at University of Limerick, Limerick Institute of Technology and other individual sites.

The event will culminate in a parade of athletes from Arthur’s Park to King John’s Castle. The Mayor of Limerick Cllr Ger Fahy said the games will bolster tourism in the city and the wider mid-west region.

Unique Event Management is licensed to stage the All Ireland Corporate Games.
