‘People here have been waiting a long time and hoping for this’

AFTER Munster rugby basked in glory through torrential rain in Limerick last Saturday, it was if the people of Moyross, Southill and Ballinacurra Weston took that as an omen yesterday.

‘People here have been waiting a long time and hoping for this’

On a wet, winter Monday the sprawling estates exuded a new confidence and belief.

The years listening to big talk was over.

Action was now at hand to change their lives for the better.

Deirdre O’Doherty, aged 26, from Cosgrave Park, was so impressed by the work of community Garda Dave Mulcahy in Moyross, she decided to join the force.

Now a student at Templemore College, Deirdre was present at yesterday’s launch as a piper with the Corpus Christi Pipe and Drum band.

She said: “I joined the band when it was formed here in Moyross more than 12 years ago.

“When I heard about the plan initially I was a bit sceptical.

“It is something that has to be done and needs to be done. It will make a major change in Moyross and will have a very positive social impact.

“There are some lovely green areas here and there are so many clubs and facilities.

“There are a few bad eggs in certain areas of Moyross and we get unfairly treated in the media with the bad things on the front pages.

“There is a great community spirit here and everybody pulls together,” said Ms O’Doherty.

Valerie Clohessy, aged 24, was brought up in Moyross and her mother works in the community centre.

Valerie, who works as a special needs assistance in a city school, said: “This vision report is great for the community. The people here have been waiting a long time and hoping for this.

“It can only bring better things for the people of Moyross.”

Fr Pat Hogan, who is parish priest in Moyross said the vision report was a most comprehensive document.

Fr Hogan said: “Following the publication of the John Fitzgerald report, the chief executive of the regeneration agencies Brendan Kenny has done a tremendous job in putting the two regeneration boards together and they are obviously very focussed having brought forward this vision report in such a short period of time.”
