THE Health and Safety Authority yesterday vowed to increase its workplace inspections by 10% to 17,500 in 2008.

It said it would carry out more inspections in sectors where its probes had previously been minimal including, somewhat surprisingly, restaurants.

The authority intends to publish new codes of practice and up-to-date guidance documents for employers and employees, particularly in what it termed as “high-risk” sectors, as well as continuing its campaign to raise awareness among directors and senior managers of their legal responsibilities.
