HSE to delay filling frontline posts
The HSE, in a new circular, states critical frontline vacancies which arose before the start of 2008 can only be filled when another post falling vacant after January 1 is “identified and suppressed”.
The Irish Hospital Consultants Association said it was seriously concerned.
“In effect this means the recruitment embargo, which was implemented from last September onward, is continuing and the problems for patients will get worse,” the IHCA said.
The IHCA is insisting locum cover for absent frontline staff is provided to ensure service levels for patients.
“The IHCA is calling on the HSE to revise its instructions so frontline vacancies are filled without further delay and full locum cover is provided for maternity and other leave for frontline staff.”
Meanwhile, Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris said a shortage or radiography staff was adding to the problems of Kerry General Hospital.
He said A&E patients & could be waiting an hour to be seen when the radiographer was needed in surgery.
He said he had a letter from the local hospital network manager Gerry O’Dwyer, pointing out the hospital had identified the need for extra radiography staff but, despite applying for funding last year, none was received.
