MORE teachers are quitting their careers early than are joining the profession, it emerged last night.

Fine Gael education spokesman Brian Hayes warned the situation was “extremely worrying” as the number retiring before they need to has doubled in the past six years.

The figure for 2007 was 1,340 — a dramatic rise on the 641 number recorded in 2001.
