CHRISTMAS has turned to tragedy for the families of four people who lost their lives in weekend road accidents.

A male pedestrian in his 30s was killed after being hit by a van in the Co Limerick village of Murroe yesterday evening.

Gardaí at Bruff are investigating the incident at around 6.15pm and have appealed for witnesses to what was the fourth weekend road death, which happened on the Limerick side of the village.

A 60-year-old man died an hour earlier when he was hit by a car and a bus on the N3 near Navan, Co Meath. He was walking at Garlow Cross when the accident happened.

A man and a woman both in their 20s died in separate Co Louth road accidents at the weekend.

The 23-year-old victim of a two-car crash at Cornamucklagh near Omeath on Saturday night was named as Aine Clarke from Newry, Co Down.

Gardaí in Dundalk are investigating the death of a 29-year-old van driver involved in a single vehicle accident at Whiterath, Drumiskin, yesterday morning.

The deaths brought the number of fatalities on the country’s roads to 333 so far this year, more than 30 fewer than this time a year ago.
