IRELAND recorded the highest level of immigration in history last year, with 109,500 people arriving here from other countries.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) population estimates have revealed that immigration between April 2006 and April 2007 was “substantially higher than for any other year”.

A second report published by the CSO yesterday, based on the number of PPS or social security numbers handed out, shows there were 204,000 new arrivals in Ireland in 2006.
