Warning on mixing alcohol with flu remedies
But pharmacists are warning that mixing the two will put your health and personal safety at risk.
The Irish Pharmaceutical Union said most people are unaware that routine medication increases the effect of alcohol on the body.
The union said the public should be particularly careful when mixing drink with herbal remedies.
“A cocktail of alcohol and such remedies can result in marked sedation, which can impair judgment and personal safety.
“Women are particularly at risk of complications caused by consuming alcohol in addition to medication,” it said in a warning issued yesterday evening.
“Herbal remedies which use echinacea, chamomile and valerian, which are especially popular with women, can lead to marked sedation and drowsiness when combined with alcohol.
“The side effects can also reduce levels of personal safety on a night out,” it added.
Union vice-president Liz Hector, said: “Traditionally this time of year is when there is a high demand for common cold remedies and herbal supplements. Many people are unaware that they should avoid alcohol while taking them.
“It is important to consult your pharmacist when buying any medication and this is especially important at this time of year.
“Personal safety is an issue for all at this time.
“We would encourage people to speak to their pharmacist if they have a concern about the effects of consuming alcohol with any form of medication,” said Ms Hector.
