Green taxes condemned

THE difference between a farm jeep and the so-called Donnybrook tractor, an SUV driven by an urban dweller, must be recognised by the Government, a farm leader declared last night.

Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association president Jackie Cahill said he would be taking the issue up with the relevant ministers.

He made the call when pointing out that farmers will be very concerned that the so-called green taxes in the budget will be disproportionately severe on road vehicles essential for farmers.

Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan welcomed the provision of more than €1.9 billion for her department. She said that in addition to voted money, her department will spend about €1.4bn in EU funding, primarily in EU direct payments.

Finance Minister Brian Cowen earlier announced that a further €35m is being provided to bring the total grant aid for the farm waste management scheme next year to €150m.

IFA president Padraig Walshe said he was very disappointed the discrimination against farmers and other self-employed people from the PAYE tax credit has been further exacerbated by the increase in rates announced.
