Memorial awards given to science students

STUDENTS at a Limerick boys’ secondary school yesterday received bursaries to encourage them to pursue studies in the sciences.

Memorial awards given to science students

Analog Devices Ireland (ADI) presented 30 awards to students in CBS Sexton Street as part of the inaugural Eamonn Dillon Memorial Bursary Awards. The awards, presented in memory of former ADI employee who died in a car accident in Chicago in 2005, mark the achievements of students in maths and science.

Eamonn, himself a recipient of a JP McManus college scholarship, was a past pupil of CBS.

The awards totalled €11,000 at an event at the ADI Sports and Social Club in Mungret College.

Eamonn Dillon’s family were also present. The bursary award-winning students were given a tour of ADI facility in Raheen industrial estate to meet with the engineering team.

Students in the junior stream received awards of €250 and the senior stream received €500.

Engineering manager, ADI, Brian O’Mara said: “Eamonn’s colleagues and friends at Analog Devices felt that the establishment of a bursary programme in his memory would be a fitting tribute to him. Eamonn excelled at his job and was consistently enthusiastic about the range of opportunities that a role in engineering opened to him.”

Noel Earlie, CBS school principal said the scheme has proven to be a strong incentive for pupils to perform well in maths and science.
