Pathologist reported to Medical Council

Last night, the Health Service Executive (HSE) South confirmed it had been in contact with the council after issues relating to the work of the pathologist, who has since resigned, came to light.

A statement from the HSE said CUH had “informed the Medical Council of their concerns”.

The locum pathologist worked at CUH from July 2 to August 20, 2007, before being placed on administrative leave. His work was referred to a London laboratory for analysis and weekend reports suggested up to 166 patient cases were being reviewed, with question marks over 15 diagnoses.

When asked about the vetting procedures used when employing locums, the HSE said it entailed not just an interview process and references (including current employer), but, in addition, Medical Council registration, overseas registration for up to five years, Garda clearance and a declaration to be signed by the appointee verifying that they are not the subject of any investigation by overseas medical councils or police.

The HSE did not respond when asked if it had notified the relevant Finnish authorities in relation to this particular locum who no longer resides in Ireland. A request for further information in relation to the number of patients involved in the London laboratory review was also turned down on the basis that details could not be discussed until it is complete.

Separately, a number of women will be seen by breast cancer specialists in Portlaoise today as part of a review of ultrasounds carried out at Portlaoise hospital between 2005 and 2007. A review of almost 600 ultrasounds led to more than 100 women being recalled for surgical review. However Mr
