Government backs skills training plan

Skillnet, which will be funded by Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment, is an enterprise-led support body set up to manage enterprise training and workplace learning.

Maria Kelly, chief executive of the chamber, said: “The aim of the Limerick Chamber Skillnet programme is to provide a fresh new approach to the way in which training is organised and delivered.

“The Limerick Chamber Skillnet implements creative and innovative training programmes, decided by the participants. As well as off-the-shelf training, there is also a more customised approach to satisfying the needs of our member companies. Involvement in training is the priority and the main focus of Skillnet is to give SME’s access to courses which may otherwise be out of their remit. Limerick Chamber Skillnet welcomes companies of all sizes and from all sectors.”

Ms Kelly said the fact that their application has been approved represented a strong endorsement of the programme, of the Skillnets team in the chamber and of their work in putting the programme together.

Skillnet network manager Anne Morris said: “The Network is one which continues to thrive on diversity and on the premise that lifelong learning is a prerequisite in today’s multi-cultural and technological world. Moving forward, I hope that our network continues to surpass expectations and that our members, and indeed future members, continue to look to us when it comes to their training requirements.”

In 2008 the Limerick Chamber Skillnet will place a strong emphasis on innovation and new methods of learning which reflects member’s demands and also the emergent humanist approach to business.

Ms Kelly said: “Through the One-Step-Up initiative, Limerick Chamber Skillnet will offer up to 90% funding on training which falls into the category of low basic skills (any foundation or essential skills training, below that of Leaving Certificate level) and up to 70% funding on non-low basic skills training courses.

“Limerick Chamber Skillnet plan a networking evening in the new year which will serve as a platform for a relaunch of the network.”
