Mater ‘needs extra staff’ to cater for midlands cancer referrals

A LEADING cancer specialist at the Mater Hospital in Dublin said they will have no difficulty treating additional patients from the midlands once extra resources are put in place.

Consultant oncologist Dr John McCaffrey said they were “happy to be asked” to take referrals from the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar, where breast care services were withdrawn last Friday.

“We do have all the elements of a multidisciplinary team and we have an excellent unit,” said Dr McCaffrey.
