Two arrested over spate of Cork burglaries

GARDAÍ were yesterday questioning two people in relation to a spate of burglaries in Co Cork which involved the theft of tens of thousands of euro worth of property.

Gardaí have recovered what they described as a “substantial” amount of property following the arrest of a man and a woman in the Ballincollig area on Monday night. Both were said to be foreigners who were living in Ballincollig.

The man and woman were being detained yesterday at Bandon Garda Station where detectives were interviewing them in relation to a spate of burglaries in the Mallow, Midleton and Bandon areas during the past few weeks.

Both were being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. “We have recovered a lot of property and are currently in the process of getting owners to identify it,” a senior Garda spokesman said. It is understood gardaí have seized property worth approximately €25,000, but believe there is an awful lot more which remains outstanding and the investigation is continuing.

The Garda spokesman added considerable amounts of jewellery as well as televisions, videos and audio equipment had been stolen during the burglaries.

He added the same modus operandi was used for the burglaries, which all took place during the day when the house owners were out at work.

“We are particularly interested in hearing from anybody who saw a man and a woman acting suspiciously in the Innishannon and Kilpatrick areas last Sunday, again during the day. We want to hear from the public, especially if they saw these people in a red Peugeot 406,” the senior Garda spokesman said.

He said it was possible that the man and the woman had an accomplice or accomplices with them at the time.
