Archbishop Brady to deliver special Mass for abuse survivors

ARCHBISHOP Seán Brady will address survivors of institutional abuse from around the world at a special Mass in Cork this weekend.

Archbishop Brady to deliver special Mass for abuse survivors

In one of his first public engagements since his elevation to cardinal, Dr Brady will deliver the homily during the ceremony organised by Right of Place, the support group set up to help and support survivors of institutional abuse in Ireland.

However, up to 300 survivors from Ireland, England, America and Australia are expected to attend the Mass at St Joseph’s SMA Church in Wilton at 2pm tomorrow. It will remember all those who went through industrial and special schools, all those who suffered abuse while there and all those who died.

Right of Place spokesman Tony Tracey said those who are due to attend are expecting to hear a “positive” message. “We have worked hard to support people who suffered institutional abuse.

“It is all about truth, justice and healing. And these Masses are part of the healing,” Mr Tracey said.

The group issued the invite several months ago to 68-year-old Dr Brady to deliver the homily in his capacity as Primate of All Ireland. Mr Tracey said Dr Brady graciously accepted the invitation and he did not see his attendance as a coup. However, Dr Brady’s elevation to cardinal on Wednesday by Pope Benedict XVI means his homily during Saturday’s Mass will have added status.

“We are expecting him to recognise the tragic situation these survivors found themselves in. We assume it will be positive,” said Mr Tracey.

Right of Place is managed by a committee of five former residents of industrial schools, assisted by a staff of seven former residents of industrial schools. The group is funded by the Department of Education, through the City of Cork VEC.
