KMPG permit stoppage lifted

THE Department of Enterprise lifted its temporary suspension of work permits to KPMG earlier this summer after the accountancy firm gave reassurances of full compliance with employment laws, the Irish Examiner has learnt.

The department stopped issuing permits to the company as a result of apparent discrepancies in the salaries of two KPMG employees in India who applied last February for permits to work on a short-term basis in Ireland.

Officials at the Irish Embassy in Delhi raised concerns about the apparent discrepancy between the weekly salary stated on the work permit (€900) and the actual weekly amount they would get paid in Ireland (€196). A salary of €196 is below the minimum wage and is in breach of Irish employment laws. The department sought clarification on the inconsistencies. It suspended the issuing of new permits and began a review of all permits issued to the company.

At the time, the company defended what it described as a “mobility scheme” which allowed foreign accountants gain experience in Ireland.

The accountants would continue to be paid their usual salary while receiving €196 in weekly maintenance while in Ireland. The company also paid for their accommodation expenses.

The scheme has now been regularised and according to department sources, KPMG is now fully compliant with Irish employment laws.
