Two pensioners and man being questioned over murder

TWO elderly pensioners arrested in connection with the murder of Gary Grant in Limerick on Monday were still being held last night.

A man aged 20, who is related to the pensioners, and who was arrested shortly after the murder, was also still in custody last night.

The elderly man, aged 81, was taken from Mayorstone Garda Station to the Mid Western Regional Hospital on Tuesday night after he complained of chest pains. He was taken back to the station after he was checked by doctors.

A postmortem examination found that Mr Grant, 25, the father of three young children, died from a single bullet wound to the side.

A semi-automatic handgun found in searches near the murder scene in St Mary’s Park is believed to be the murder weapon and has been sent to the ballistics section at Garda headquarters. A bag of ammunition was also found.

The shooting happened at around 10.15pm on Monday as six armed detectives and two uniformed gardaí patrolled St Mary’s Park.

Two armed detectives were near the scene of the crime in St Ita’s Street when the shooting occurred.

Meanwhile, a third Polish man was yesterday arrested and questioned about the death of a fellow Pole, Mateusz Sabik.

Mr Sabik, 20, died on Monday at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he was admitted on September 29 with injuries after being assaulted in Ellen Street.

Groups of Polish nationals reportedly had been fighting among themselves and it is believed Mr Sabik received a blow to the head.

Two Polish men arrested on Tuesday were released without charge.

Gardaí are preparing a file for the DPP.
