Fresh appeal in abandoned baby case

THE mother of a baby boy whose body was found in a wood in the North seven years ago has been urged to come forward to help police establish what happened.

Fresh appeal in abandoned baby case

Detectives investigating the death of the newborn boy, who was named Stewart by police, said they wanted to help his mother to come to terms with the tragedy and would treat her compassionately.

Stewart was found by a man walking his dog in a shallow grave on October 6 in a wooded area known as the Old Gasworks off the Portaferry Road between Newtownards and Greyabbey. Despite a police investigation and considerable publicity at the time, police have not been able to establish the exact circumstances.

On the seventh anniversary of the discovery of the body, the officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Brian Murphy, launched a fresh appeal for information and said he appreciated the emotional turmoil Stewart’s mother must have gone through.

“I have great sympathy for the dilemma she clearly found herself in,” he said.
