FEARS increased over the weekend that the bluetongue virus, now spreading in Britain, could reach Ireland.

It followed confirmation that 11 cases of the debilitating livestock infection have been detected in Britain where the status of the disease has been upgraded to that of an outbreak.

British authorities had held out the possibility that the virus could be isolated, but tests results confirmed the disease was spreading.
