A former student of CIT’s School of Music, she is one of the most critically acclaimed actors of the past 30 years for her work in theatre, film, television and radio.
After studying at Rada in London, she worked with the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1980s.
She is well known for her screen roles, having starred in My Left Foot, Three Men and A Little Lady, Jane Eyre, The Butcher Boy, The Avengers, The Black Dahlia and, more recently, as Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter films.
CIT also honoured former Waterford Crystal chief executive Dr Paddy Galvin and Microsoft vice-president Robert Short, at the black-tie event hosted by broadcaster Leo Enright.
Cork-born Mr Galvin studied at the Crawford Municipal Technical Institute (now CIT).
He joined Waterford Crystal as chief executive in 1989 and was appointed chairman in 1992.
Microsoft corporate vice-president Mr Short completed a telecommunications technician’s course at the Crawford Municipal Technical Institute before taking up a position at Digital Equipment Corporation in Galway where he developed programs to optimise computer assembly which were deployed in plants in Galway and Puerto Rico.
In 1988 he moved to Microsoft to concentrate on improving the architecture of the PC.
Each of the recipients was presented with a sterling silver strawberry dish made by the silversmiths at Sean Carroll and Sons of Rutland Street, Cork.
