Family waiting for son’s organs

THE family of a young man who died after an assault in the Canary Islands have described as a “nightmare” the wait for his organs to be returned to Ireland.

Family waiting for son’s organs

Special needs student Derek Cumiskey, 19, was killed in a night attack while enjoying a holiday with his sister Karen last month after completing his Junior Cert.

Despite burying him, Derek Cumiskey’s family are still waiting for his organs to be returned following two autopsies in Lanzarote. His older sister Karen explained:

“The judge put it back nearly for another month. It’s an absolute nightmare. We want Derek’s organs back so we can get our own autopsy done on them. We don’t know what’s going on.” The Cumiskeys have since lobbied local TDs to help speed up the investigation.

Fianna Fáil TD Chris Andrews yesterday said he had contacted both the offices of the ministers for Justice and Foreign Affairs urging them to help.
