PAT Rabbitte’s decision to resign as Labour leader yesterday was taken to allow another leader time to “find their feet” at the party’s helm.

Mr Rabbitte said he had reflected while on holiday in recent weeks whether he should continue as leader for a second term. His leadership was endorsed until October 2008.

But there was no point waiting that time out if a second term was not on the cards.
