Union fights to keep Fáilte guide

THE trade union Impact has demanded the Government stop Fáilte Ireland from withdrawing from its role of inspecting 5,800 self-catering facilities and publishing a self-catering guide.

Union fights to keep Fáilte guide

The tourism authority wrote to self-catering operators in July telling them that from this summer they would no longer inspect or approve individual self-catering accommodation.

Fáilte Ireland also said the shamrock logo could not be used by self-catering operators after December 31.

The trade union has written to Tourism Minister Séamus Brennan listing six reasons why he should seek a reversal of the decision.

Impact, which represents 150 workers in Fáilte Ireland regional tourist centres, said while it would deal with “any attempt to diminish the conditions of its members” it pointed out that:

The certification process is respected by customers and the tourist industry.

The service is delivered effectively and efficiently by its members and the company has never suggested there are any compelling financial reasons for their decision.

No network of “private certification agencies” will be able to provide the quality guarantee provided by Fáilte Ireland.

Impact national secretary Peter Nolan told the minister in the letter: “It is the union’s belief that if it’s not broken don’t fix it.”
