Teen’s body to remain in Lanzarote

The 18-year-old died on the island of Lanzarote after being struck on the back of his head while returning home to his holiday apartment early on Wednesday morning.

A model student, he had only finished his Junior Certificate at a special needs education school in Blackrock, Co Dublin.

His family are devastated and his three older sisters are in the popular resort of Puerto del Carmen while police investigate his death.

Neighbours and relatives continued to send messages of sympathy to his parents John and Ann yesterday at the family home on Townsend Street, in Dublin city centre.

However, they are unlikely to be able to bury their son’s remains for a number of days or possibly weeks.

“It will take another week or two for the remains to come back. It will be a tough time for the family over the next week or so,” said local priest Fr Paul St John.

The inquest is expected to take within ten days as there have been reports that organs from Derek Cumiskey’s remains have been sent for further analysis after a post mortem. It is believed the teenager’s death may also have been due to a heart attack after the brutal assault he sustained on the street.

Police in Lanzarote are believed to be looking for at least two men seen leaving the scene of the attack in Puerto del Carmen.

Two other people, believed to be Irish, allegedly witnessed the incident.
