Man suffers serious neck injuries in nightclub bottle attack

A FILE is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after a Polish man suffered serious neck wounds in a vicious bottle assault in a nightclub.

The 22-year-old was recovering in Cork University Hospital (CUH) last night after undergoing surgery for a large gash at the back of his neck, and on cuts to the back of his head.

He was one of three Polish men injured during the assault on the dance floor of the Savoy nightclub on Cork’s St Patrick’s Street in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A 28-year-old Polish man suffered serious hand wounds and also underwent surgery at CUH yesterday.

The third man suffered minor injuries.

They were among a group of Polish nationals who were socialising in the city nightclub.

It is understood a row flared in the venue earlier after the girlfriend of a Irishman was allegedly insulted.

Then at 12.20am, hundreds of clubbers watched in horror as one of the Irish men smashed a bottle on the head of the 22-year-old Polish man.

A huge fight ensued with up to 10 men involved.

Witnesses said the dance floor looked like an abbatoir afterwards.

An Irish man ran from the nightclub but was pursued by bouncers.

A 26-year-old from North Cork was arrested within seconds on St Patrick’s Street under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and taken to the Bridewell Garda Station for questioning.

He was released yesterday without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Superintendent Michael Finn said gardaí were examining CCTV footage from the nightclub yesterday as part of their investigation.

But he appealed for witnesses who were in the night club at the time to contact gardaí.
